It has not, however, been scanning <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/guides\/photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iCloud Photos<\/a> or iCloud backups.<\/p>\n<p>The clarification followed me querying a rather odd statement by the company\u2019s anti-fraud chief: that Apple was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2021\/08\/20\/apples-anti-fraud-chief-child-porn-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the greatest platform for distributing child porn<\/a>.\u201d That immediately raised the question: If the company wasn\u2019t scanning iCloud photos, how could it know this?<\/p>\n<p> <a data-layer-pagetype=\"post\" data-layer-postcategory=\"aapl,csam,privacy\" data-layer-viewtype=\"taxonomy-ninetofive_featured\" data-post-id=\"746344\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2021\/08\/23\/apple-scans-icloud-mail-for-csam\/#more-746344\" class=\"more-link\">more\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apple has confirmed to me that it already scans iCloud Mail for CSAM, and has been doing so since 2019.
